Scholarships


On January 16, 1920, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the campus of Howard University by five visionary women who dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for Black women and sought to establish a new organization based on the principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood.

The Upsilon Zeta Zeta Chapter is seeking applicants for the following scholarship award in pursuance of our founding principles. For 2023, two scholarship awards are offered. The recipient will be awarded at the annual Awards Banquet in June. More details regarding the banquet will be forthcoming.

The Mary Leatherman Scholarship 2024

Two (2) scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $500 to female high school seniors enrolled in a trade school within the Center, Grandview, Hickman Mills, Kansas City, Lee Summit, and Raytown areas.

The Mary Leatherman Scholarship honors an outstanding woman who strived to assist the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and their youth auxiliary in Grandview, Missouri. Mary Leatherman was an avid supporter, fundraiser, mentor, and a key player in supporting Upsilon Zeta Zeta’s youth auxiliary from inception. In honor of her professional work, applicants must be high school students enrolled in a trade school such as Herndon Career Center, Manual Career and Technical Center, or other district-affiliated professional or trade school programs.

When is the last day to submit an application?
❖ Applications are due by Friday, May 31,2024.

Are all supplemental documents required?
❖ All documentation must be uploaded and submitted with the application by the
deadline.

Why are Black women targeted for these scholarships?
❖ As a historically Black sorority that strives to fight for a socially just society, it is
important for us to acknowledge the historical and continued marginalization
experienced by Black/African American women. While not limited to Black/African
American women, these two scholarships target Black/African American women to
begin to help add resources for a specific population of women who have been
historically underrepresented and denied access to resources.

How much is the scholarship?

community service, demonstrating sisterhood, and exemplifying finer womanhood.
