Scholarship Facts -2022

On January 16, 1920, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the campus of Howard University by five visionary women who dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for Black women and sought to establish a new organization based on the principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood.

In pursuance of our founding principles, Upsilon Zeta Zeta Chapter is seeking applicants for the following scholarship awards. These two scholarship awards target, but are not limited to women who identify as Black or African American. To apply for our annual Scholarships, click Upsilon Zeta Zeta Scholarship Application. Applications are due by Sunday, May 1, 2022. The recipients will be awarded at the annual Awards Banquet in June. More details regarding the banquet will be forthcoming.

The Mary Leatherman Scholarship

2022

One (1) scholarship in the amount of $500 to a female high school senior, enrolled in a trade school, within the Center, Grandview, Hickman Mills, Kansas City, Lee Summit and Raytown area.

The purpose of the Mary Leatherman Scholarship is to recognize an outstanding woman who strived to assist the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and their youth auxiliary. Mary Leatherman was an avid supporter, fundraiser, mentor, and a key player in supporting Upsilon Zeta Zeta’s youth auxiliary from inception. In honor of her professional work, a Certified Medical Technician (CMT) for over 30 years, applicants must be a high school student enrolled in a trade school such as Herndon Career Center, Manual Career Technical Center or other district affiliated professional or trade school program.

The Upsilon Zeta Zeta Founders’ Fellowship

2022

-One (1) scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a female currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in the fields of education, music, or social work.

The purpose of the Upsilon Zeta Zeta Founders’ Fellowship is to honor our illustrious founders, often referred to as the 5 Pearls, who excelled in the fields of education, music, and social work. Applicants applying for this fellowship must be currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in the fields of education, music, or social work.

When is the last day to submit an application?
❖ Applications are due by Sunday, May 1, 2022

Are all supplemental documents required?
❖ All documentation must be uploaded and submitted with the application by the deadline.

Why are Black women targeted for these scholarships?
❖ As a historically Black sorority that strives to fight for a socially just society, it is important for us to acknowledge the historical and continued marginalization experienced by Black/African American women. While not limited to Black/African American women, these two scholarships target Black/African American women to begin to help add resources for a specific population of women who have been historically underrepresented and denied access to resources.

How much is the scholarship/fellowship?
❖ The Mary Leatherman Scholarship

How/When will I receive the scholarship/fellowship?

What can my scholarship/fellowship funds be used for?
❖ Scholarship/fellowship funds can be used for tuition, books, room, board, or groceries.

How will my headshot be used?
❖ Headshots will be used for promotional purposes only.

How many letters of recommendation are required?
❖ Three letters of recommendations are required:
➢ 2 educational/professional
➢ 1 personal
